LA Chinese Massacre of 1871
Reading about this event was wild. The whole background to it is crazy and involves Tongs who were like Chinese immigrant gangs and disputes over Chinese sex slaves. The disputes between rival Tongs and the involvement of white handlers led to racial unrest and Chinatown in LA being mobbed by over 500 people.
The craziest part to me was when I read that the 19 Chinese men murdered represented 10% of the Chinese population which was only around 172.
WHAT?!
The Chinese population wasn't even 200 and STILL, the white & Hispanic people felt THAT incensed to kill them???
8 men were convicted of the murders and lynchings but their convictions were appealed and overturned so none faced prison time.
Just 9 years later the Chinese Exclusion Act, the only legislation to bar an ethnic group from immigration, was passed.
The LA Chinese Massacre is only one of the very many racial massacres to occur countless times in the United States.
Now we see China Virus yellow peril mentality taking over. 1871 seems like such a long time ago until...it doesn't.
I feel it's important for people to know about this and to also consider that the vast majority of indentured Chinese men were kept in camps deprived of resources and mainly amongst other men. The background behind Tongs and sex slavery is tragic and needs to be known to realize the extent of oppression that happened that deprived Asian women and Asian men of their humanity and their rights.
