Malibu By Sunset

By: Jace Lu- Oh

Hello, Asian Masculinity Articles! My name is Jace Lu-Oh. I'm an aspiring artist but what makes me stand out from the rest? Well, I am very Pro-Asian and aware of the current state of Asian Masculinity, so that's a start. I would never pursue art as a career. Honestly, I got discouraged because I was never interested in the types of art, rather than following my style. I'm a blue-collar worker, but I keep art as my primary hobby. I'm heavily influenced by pop culture and art style from the '80s.

So, what do I know as an Asian man? Well, as an Asian man who was born and raised in a white district, it was not easy for me. Especially when you are gifted with a mindset of a Proud Asian Man. You have two options, give up and become self-hating, or keep fighting and be awarded benefits. It is a struggle and no other, even other Asians could not comprehend.

My parents were emotionally absent in my life. I never knew my dad that well. In school, I had difficulty learning and sometimes was described as clumsy. I struggled with understanding how things work because nobody taught me. I felt alone in this world.

Looking back, my 15-year-old self struggling would remind myself to "Have Faith". From that phrase, I repair my mind over and over, and I learned to better myself. This topic is underlooked but important to discuss, especially associating with Asian mental health, although many Asians are from the enclave and haven't experienced what I went through.

However, I know all about what it's like. For all my other Asians out there, if you are going through struggles and feel like wanting to cry, don't worry. I'll be a brother to you.
