Christopher Teh is a young English teacher currently in Malaysia. He is very proactive and voices his opinions loudly through various social media platforms. Today, he shares his view on Sinophobia. Sinophobia is Anti-Chinese sentiments such as hatred, paranoia, fear of China, its people, or hatred of its culture.
Sinophobia has Nothing to do with the Chinese Communist Party
By: Christopher Teh
Sinophobia exists, and it has nothing to do with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Rather, it simply gives Sinophobes a respectable outlet to cover up their Sinophobia under the disguise of 'criticizing the CCP." These people will attack Chinese people, for one thing, ie they'll say "The Chinese have this weird custom of living with their parents in their 20s, and it creates really coddled momma's boys." Yet in Indian and South Korean culture (most other Eastern cultures as well), this practice of multigenerational households is also common. However, Sinophobes treat it as a 'Chinese problem'. In fact, they'll probably praise other Asian cultures for having such 'closely-knit family units' while condemning China for the same thing. Just like how they insist that Aboriginal people in Australia must learn English and Western culture, yet if China tries to teach the Uyghur people in Xinjiang how to speak Mandarin, suddenly it is 'cultural genocide".
Why did Kevin Carrico describe the Hanfu revival movement as a 'racial supremacist movement' similar to Nazism, but doesn't eyelid at the Japanese for wearing Kimonos despite the fact that it isn't the clothing of the Jomon minority in Japan?
Did the CCP exist when Winston Churchill expressed support for the ultimate partition of 'Barbarian China' from the rest of the world in 1902?
Did the CCP exist when America legislated the Chinese exclusion act of 1882?
Did the CCP exist when Stoddard cautioned about the Yellow Peril in 'The Rising Tide of Colour' in 1920?
Did the CCP exist when anti-miscegenation laws were implemented against Chinese men?
Did the CCP exist when Chinese miners in 19th century America and Australia were beaten, killed, and racially assaulted for their culture, slanted eyes, and Asian heritage?
Did the CCP exist when British colonists in Asia made signboards that explicitly read: "No dogs and Chinese allowed."?
In the past, Sinophobes were a lot more obvious with their intentions. They could even be extremely violent in expressing their hatred and suspicion for the Chinese (ie Sook Ching Massacre). But today, they have evolved into something insidious. Western countries have been looking down on China long before the communist party was born.
